Early Career
Daddy originally intended to pursue a career in professional baseball, and was only recording music as a hobby. However, after he was shot in his leg, he decided to pursue a career in music as the bullet was never removed, hindering all chances of a professional sports career. In 1991, he participated in the mixtape “Playero 34”, leading to his first official studio project entitled “No Mercy”, released in 1995 – he initially emulated other artists such as Vico C.
Eventually, he took elements from artists he liked, and developed an original style which made him the first to perform reggaeton music. Throughout the 1990s, most of his projects were banned by the Puerto Rican government, objecting to explicit lyrics. He is credited for inventing the name Reggaeton on the album “Playero 36”. His next project would be a collaboration with the rapper Nas, for several compilation albums which found success in Puerto Rico.
Rise in the Industry
Over the next few years, Yankee focused on making music videos, and formed an unofficial duo with Nicky Jam, releasing several singles together. He then released his first album entitled “El Cangri.com” which found international success, as well as in various markets in the US, and in 2003 he created the compilation album “Los Homerun-es” which contained his first charting single. During the same year, he started collaborating with Luny Tunes on the album “Mas Flow”, which produced the commercially successful song “Cogela Que Va Sin Jockey”.
After the release of his next album entitled “Barrio Fino” in 2004, he won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. The album contained the hit single “Gasolina” which received a lot of airtime internationally, and was also noted for including music from other genres. The success of this album led him to try his hand at other combinations of reggaeton, and he started touring various countries as well. Around the same time, he was featured in the single “Oye Mi Canto” which reached 12th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
King of Reggaeton
In 2005, Daddy was considered one of the most recognized reggaeton artists within the music industry, and he continued to win awards, the success of his albums leading to promotional contracts with companies such as Pepsi. The following year he was named as one of the 100 most influential people of all time, and secured a $20 million contract with Interscope Records. He released his next album in 2007 entitled “El Cartel: The Big Boss”, which saw him return to his hip hop roots, and he continued to perform internationally and release compilation albums. He then worked on a film soundtrack album entitled “Talento De Barrio”, which was certified as a multiple platinum album by the RIAA. After several other projects, he began working on his ninth album – Mundial” – and released several singles to promote the album before its release. In 2012 he released his next album – “Prestige” – set to be released at an earlier date, however, a hurricane led to the record studio losing half the album content. Despite that, the album contained numerous charting songs, and the album itself reached 39th spot on the Billboard 200.
