Early Life and Education
Hayley is of British and Native American descent, with her father a photographer turned shaman who has the Native American name Star Touches Earth. She grew up an only child, and her parents separated when she was two years old, after which she lived mainly with her mother in the Ladbroke Grove area of west London where she grew up, but during every summer, she visited her father in the US, although very close to her mother, seeing their relationship more as a close friendship. She attended Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girls’ School in London, and then took her A-levels at the London Oratory School. Before matriculating from high school, she was offered a place reading theology and philosophy at Oxford University, but failed to acquire the requisite grades; she later mentioned that she sabotaged her opportunity as she never really wanted to go there. Instead she took two years off, travelling with her father and working for a casting director. Afterwards, she enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, training there for the next three years, working with Michelle Dockery and Jodie Whittaker. She graduated in 2005, but not before appearing in her first on-screen role in a Pringles potato crisps television commercial.
A few months after completing her education at Guildhall, Atwell appeared in her first film, entitled “Cassandra’s Dream” playing stage actress Angela Stark; the film was directed and written by Woody Allen, and filmed in secret at Aviles, Spain. In 2008, she was cast in the film “The Duchess” playing the character Bess Foster, and also worked on the Miramax film entitled “Brideshead Revisited”. She was initially criticized for her weight after being cast, but was advised by co-star Emma Thompson that she was a model, not an actor. In the end, they accepted her without a need to change her weight.
In 2009 she made her West End debut in a revival of “A View from the Bridge”, producing a Laurence Olivier Award nominated performance in the Arthur Miller play set in 1950s America, following a protagonist who has a borderline obsession with his wife’s orphaned niece. This led her to her next project, the AMC television miniseries entitled “The Prisoner”, a remake of a 1960s series of the same name, then the following year she starred in a television adaptation of the novel entitled “Any Human Heart”, written by William Boyd.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
In 2011, Hayley was cast in the superhero film “Captain America: the First Avenger”, playing Agent Peggy Carter who is the World War II love interest of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Her role in the film gained her a lot of attention, and she would then voice the same character in the video game “Captain America: Super Soldier”, and reprised her role in the 2013 short film “Agent Carter”, followed in 2014 with a part in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Other MCU films she has been a part of include “Ant-Man”, and “Avengers: Age of Ultron”.
She then made a guest appearance in two episodes of the television show “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, which led her to a lead role in “Marvel’s Agent Carter”, which aired from 2015 to 2016, when the show was cancelled, but she still continued to play Peggy Carter, voicing her character in “Lego Marvel’s Avengers” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
In 2015, Atwell appeared in a live action adaptation of “Cinderella” directed by Kenneth Branagh, in which she portrayed Cinderella’s mother, and she was then cast to star in the pilot for the series “Conviction”, but the show was cancelled after no further episodes were ordered by the ABC. In 2018, she played the character Evelyn Robin in the live action “Winnie the Pooh” film entitled “Christopher Robin”, with the titular character played by Ewan McGregor. One of her latest projects is the three part BBC adaptation of the novel “The Long Song”, written by Andrea Levy; the story follows a slave on a sugar plantation during 19th century Jamaica.
For her personal life, it is known that Atwell was in a relationship with writer Gabriel Bisset-Smith, who she met while studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. They were friends for seven years, before starting a long term relationship which ended in 2012. She expressed regret that she was not as open as she should have been about their relationship. She now resides in Los Angeles, California, due to the demand of her portraying Agent Carter, but also has a flat in Primrose Hill, London. She also took a course in art history and haiku while filming for “Captain America: The First Avenger”.
