Early Life and Career Beginnings
At a young age, Soyeon was very focused on her lessons in ballet, training for and entering numerous competitions as a child, and winning many of them. To focus on ballet she was home-schooled, but her mind later changed when she saw a performance of the boy band Big Bang. She began auditioning to hopefully start a career in the music industry, but was unsuccessful even after over 20 tries.
She instead shifted her focus towards rapping, and this gained the attention of numerous companies due to her uniqueness. She then returned to her love for dancing and in 2014, she saw an audition poster for Cube Entertainment. She auditioned for them and passed, becoming a trainee of the company.
As a part of Cube Entertainment, one of her first projects was in the girl group survival show “Produce 101”, and was one of the more popular contestants of the show. However, she was not able to make it into the final lineup of IOI, as she only ranked 20th overall.
Path to (G)I-DLE
She then joined another competition – “Unpretty Rapstar” – during its third season. The show is a female counterpart of another rap competition “Show Me the Money”. She was able to reach the second runner-up position in the show, which led her to record three songs for the show’s compilation album. She then completed her time as a trainee with Cube, being offered an exclusive contract as an artist. In late 2016, she made her debut as a solo artist, releasing the songs “Idle Song” and “Jelly” which she also wrote.
Two years later, after some time in inactivity, she announced her return, debuting as a part of a new girl group called (G)I-DLE, her experience and talent meaning that she was assigned as the leader and main rapper of the group. She is responsible for their debut singles “Latata” and “Hann” which became commercially successful. She was also responsible for writing five songs in their debut extended play (EP) called “I Am”. A few months later, she worked on the girl group project Station Young which saw her partner with Seulgi from Red Velvet, SinB from GFriend, and Kim Chung-ha.
Virtual Bands and Recent Work
During the same year, she and bandmate Miyeon were approached by the video game company to help in the creation of a virtual girl group called K/DA based on characters of the game “League of Legends”. The two accepted and began collaborating with Jaira Burns and Madison Beer. Their single “Pop/Stars” made their debut during the 2018 League of Legends World Championship and the music video of the song quickly reached around 100 million in a month.
Her portrayal of the character Akali proved to be highly popular among the game’s fanbase.
In 2019, she reprised her role of Akali as a part of a virtual collaborative hip-hop group called True Damage, joining Duckwrth, Thutmose, Keke Palmer, and Becky G in the release of the single “Giants”, which had a combination of English, Korean and Spanish in its lyrics. The group later performed at the 2019 League of Legends World Championship finals held in Paris.
Aside from these collaborations, she continues to work and perform with (G)I-DLE traveling around the world to perform. One of their latest releases is the extended play (EP) called “Queendom Final Comeback” which contained the title track “Lion”.
Personal Life
It is known that Soyeon is single and she is still young, focused on continuing her forward momentum with (G)I-DLE and as a solo artist. Romances are also often monitored by management as it can significantly affect the image and performance of an idol.
One of her biggest influences was a rap teacher who taught her during high school. She credits that teacher for teaching her how to write lyrics and rap well. She often uses her bandmates as inspiration when writing songs for her group. She is also known to be one of the few idols who handles the entire production and concept of a song, from the composition, writing, setting, as well as every other detail. Despite that, she does not overshadow any of her group members though her popularity has increased significantly thanks to her dedication.
