Who is Jeongyeon?

Yoo Kyung-wan was born on 1 November 1996, in Suwon, Gyeonggi, South Korea, and is a singer, best known for performing under the name Jeongyeon as a part of the South Korean girl group called Twice. The group is managed by JYP Entertainment, and has released numerous hit singles and albums since their inception.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

At a young age, Jeongyeon aspired to make it in the entertainment industry. She grew up with an older sister Gong Seung-Yeon. who would later make her breakthrough in acting. Jeongyeon, on the other hand, looked to a career in the music industry as an idol. In 2010, she attended the sixth open audition held by JYP Entertainment – the company is one of the largest of its kind in South Korea, managing many acts and talents.

She succeeded at the audition and began training under the company.

Jeongyeon spent the next five years under the radar, training. Three years into her training, she was expected to become a part of a new girl group alongside future Twice members Jihyo, Sana, and Nayeon, but the group was later canceled. She returned two years later, appearing in the television program “Sixteen”, which was created to determine the final lineup of the planned girl group called Twice.

Initially, seven members were supposed to be chosen for the group, with her making the final cut; Tzuyu and Momo were later added to the group.

Success with Twice

A few months after the finalization of the Twice lineup, Jeongyeon made her debut in the group with the extended play (EP) called “The Story Begins”. The group quickly gained attention, and on YouTube their debut song becoming the most viewed music video debut for any K-pop group.

The following year, they released another EP which contained their chart-topping single “Cheer Up”, which was also the Song of the Year at two South Korean awards show. Twice continued to build on their fame, and released their third EP called “Twicecoaster: Lane 1” which had the single “TT” which topped the charted longer than their previous hit. The EP would become the bestselling girl group album of 2016, selling over 350,000 copies.

In 2017, Twice expanded its reach to Japan, partnering with Warner Music Japan and working on a compilation album for the country called “#Twice”.

The album sold well, and became the first to reach platinum certification in the country for any Korean girl group. They also worked on their first full-length album, “Twicetagram”, which debuted at the top of the Billboard World Albums chart. Its lead single “Likey” was also at the top of the World Digital Song Sales chart.

Recent Projects and Solo Work

Twice continued their close relationship with Japan, working on Japanese singles and frequently touring the country. They are credited with helping build relationships between Korea and Japan, partly thanks to their three Japanese members.

They released their first Japanese studio album called “BDZ” in 2018, and were also the first female K-pop group to hold a Japanese dome tour, appearing in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo. One of their latest releases is their eighth EP called “Feel Special”, which gained a lot of traction in Western countries too. They have consistently sold highly with their every release, and is one of the most-streamed acts on Spotify.

Jeongyeon has also been voted as one of the most popular idols in South Korea, from 2016 to 2019, holding recognition alongside other band members including Nayeon.

She was also awarded an SBS Entertainment Award, which she shared alongside her older sister, after they hosted the music program “Inkigayo” for a year. The South Korean program airs weekly, and features numerous popular artists. Artists who are featured on the show often perform live on stage at the SBS Open Hall.

Jeongyeon is single and like many of Twice’s members, they are too busy with their work to find time for any romantic relationships. They also prefer to keep this aspect away from the public, as management is very strict when it comes to their image, including the relationships they keep.
