Who is Vic Mensa?

Victor Kwesi ‘Vic’ Mensah was born on 6 June 1993, in Chicago, Illinois USA, and is a record producer, rapper, singer, and songwriter, best known for his several solo projects throughout his career. He is also the founder of the hip-hop collective called Savemoney, often working with Chance the Rapper. He was also a member of the group Kids These Days.

Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

Vic is of Ghanaian and American descent. He grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, and attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. During his freshman year, he met and befriended Chancelor Bennett who would later become Chance the Rapper. In 2009, he made his first foray into the music industry when he formed the band called Kids These Days. He then joined Wale and J Cole for the What Dreams May Come Tour, which would lead to the debut mixtape entitled “Innanetape”. After the tour, he travelled to Europe to work with Danny Brown, and his popularity started to grow quickly over the year, leading him to become the cover of “XXL” for their 2014 Freshman Class.

He released his debut single entitled “Down on My Luck” in the UK, internationally through Virgin EMI Records, and the music video the same day. He then announced a tour for 2015, and mentioned that he planned to work with Damon Albarn in the near future. In 2015, he was featured in the Kanye West single “Wolves” in which he is heard alongside Sia, and then performed the song with the two artists during the 40th anniversary celebration of “Saturday Night Live”. West and Mensa released the official collaboration project entitled “U Mad”, and shortly afterwards he signed with the label Roc Nation, and then appeared during Jay-Z’s On the Run Tour.

Recent Projects

In 2015, Vic co-wrote the Kanye West single “All Day”, which earned him a nomination at the 58th Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song. He then collaborated with Travis Scott, iLoveMakonnen and Alexander Wang for the WANGSQUAD campaign. The following year, he released the single “No Chill” featuring Skrillex, and a reworked version of “Wolves” was released on Kanye West’s seventh studio album “The Life of Pablo”, but from which Vic’s vocals were taken off. Afterwards, he released his debut extended play entitled “There’s Alot Going On” which featured Ty Dolla Sign, and debuted in 127th spot on the US Billboard 200.

He then performed as the opening act for Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour, while also working on a second extended play entitled “The Manuscript”, which was released in 2017, and which was a lead-in to his debut album entitled “The Autobiography”. The album was eventually released through Roc Nation with the lead single entitled “Wings” featuring Pharrell Williams, with guest performances from Pusha T, Weezer, The-Dream, and Chief Keef; the album debuted in 27th spot of the US Billboard 200. Personal Life

For his personal life, it is known that Mensa has been in a few relationships in the past but none of them have ever gained any significant attention, although he has been accused of being physically abusive towards his girlfriends. In an interview with magazines “Complex” and “XXL”, he has cited numerous hip hop artists as his inspiration, including Jay-Z, Timbaland, Eminem, Missy Elliot, Nas, and 2Pac.

He also mentioned that he takes a lot of inspiration from rock artists including Gorillaz, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, and Guns N’ Roses. He’s gotten a lot of praise for his music releases, particularly for his skill of putting syllables into lines that define his artistic style.
