Wes Chatham Bio: Early Life, Family and Education
Wes Chatham was raised in North Georgia by his mother, and with a brother and sister because his parents divorced when he was only two years old. His first contact with acting came when he was only five years old – the laundry detergent company “Tide” held auditions in Savannah, Georgia for their new advertisement, and Wes’ mother decided to take his sister to the audition and brought Wes along to keep them company. While his sister was auditioning Wes and his mother were waiting for her in the hallway, and a casting director happened to be passing by when he spotted Wes and immediately decided to give him the role in their national advertising campaign. However, Wes did not venture into acting again until his high school years – when he was 13 years old he moved in with his father, and without a proper role model and adequate supervision, Wes grew to be an unruly and rebellious teenager. His mischievous acts and misbehaviour caused him to be kicked out of his high school, and had to enroll at the Give Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a second chance institution which gave another opportunity to troublesome teenagers, and consisted of special and shortened program, part of which was acting mentoring, provided by a professional theater company from Atlanta. The theatre company chose Wes to write a play which was later performed by his fellow students, and also mentored Wes until the end of his high school education, and helped him discover and nurture his love for acting and performing.
Career Beginnings
Having matriculated from high school Wes decided to join the US Navy – during his tour he was placed on the flight deck of the USS Essex where he worked as an aviation firefighter in the crash and salvage department, spending four years at this job, before finally gaining the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. His ship was chosen among the many for the biographical drama film “Antwone Fisher”, starring Denzel Washington in the lead role, and Wes was chosen by the casting director Robi Reed to play a member of the military, because Reed thought that he had an authentic military look, but also noticed Wes’ enthusiasm and talent and tried to convince him to go to Hollywood and pursue an acting career. Reed’s persuasion was successful, and Wes decided to leave the military and move to Los Angeles.
